WebDec 11, 2024 · The Boatswain’s Mate was Ethel Smyth’s fourth opera. In contrast to the previous opera, The Wreckers, it is a small scale comic piece and was very popular. It can be seen as a feminist piece, with a strong heroine who resists the advances of the eponymous boatswain, scuppering his cunning plot by pretending to shoot his accomplice.
